Net-Zero Energy Mixed Use High-Rise Building

Lead Proponent:   Sifton Properties Limited
Location:  London, ON
EIP Contribution:  $ 3,900,000
Project Total: $ 57,608,500
Strategic Area:  Energy Efficient Buildings and Communities

Project Objectives:

The objective of this FEED and demonstration Project is to construct Canada’s first mixed use multi-unit residential high-rise building to target net-zero energy performance. This building will be designed and constructed to be a repeatable example, using proven and available technology wherever possible, integrated to aggressively pursue net-zero energy, and to demonstrate the best way that others may do the same for similar buildings in the future.  This building is part of a larger development project which aims to successfully construct Canada’s first large-scale fully integrated net-zero energy community, to demonstrate that net-zero energy is feasible at the community level, and to inspire and inform widespread change across Canada’s construction industry towards net-zero energy.

Expected Results:

The key outcome of this Project is a repeatable example of a net-zero or near net-zero energy mixed use multi-unit residential high-rise building, which will lead to broad dissemination of net-zero design solutions and growth in builder capacity to deliver energy and environmental benefits across Canada.

Once the demonstration is complete and the building successfully constructed, the real learning will begin. The building will be designed to include a sufficiently sophisticated monitoring system that it may serve as an educational resource for all the project partners, as well as enable ongoing optimization of building performance, and serve as a case study resource for the broader industry.
