Project Objectives

This project aims to invest in research needed for new clean technologies and practices to help Atlantic Canadians meet their net-zero targets and research natural carbon sinks to help offset any remaining greenhouse gas emissions needed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Net Zero Atlantic will run Calls for Proposals for the Net Zero Emerging Concepts and Technologies (ECT) Research Programs for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick under two streams:

  • Stream 1 (Technology & Methods Development): projects will focus on solutions that can be created in Nova Scotia. The objective of this funding stream will be to develop and advance novel technologies, methods, and/or practices that target hard-to-abate greenhouse gas emissions within the region.
  • Stream 2 (Technology & Methods Adoption): projects will be focused on the adoption in Atlantic Canada of technologies and methods emerging in other jurisdictions. The objective of the funding stream is to encourage technoeconomic and/or feasibility studies that evaluate how technologies, methods, and/or practices demonstrated elsewhere can be imported and deployed, with or without modification in the Atlantic Canadian context.

Expected Results

This project is expected to:

  1. Develop and fund new, effective clean technologies and methods that warrant continued funding from the region’s incubation ecosystem - government, the private sector, or both.
  2. Advance studies, field work or pilot plants for promising technologies or methods that should be introduced to Atlantic Canada from other regions.
  3. Develop recommendations on how Atlantic Canada should continue investment in technologies and methods needed to achieve net zero while creating regional economic opportunities.
  4. Support promising emerging clean technologies, approaches, and practices.
  5. Support advanced studies, field work, or pilot plants for promising technologies or methods that should be introduced to Atlantic Canada from other regions.
