Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to convert a functioning oil and gas operation to a geothermal site, without interrupting hydrocarbon production. It will recover geothermal waste heat energy from a traditional oil and gas waterflood operation in Alberta.

The project will utlize Razor’s currently operating oil & gas field and associated infrastructure, which has produced fluids (100,000 – 120,000 barrels per day) and temperatures of 90-100oC to recover waste heat at the main field battery to develop a ‘functioning geothermal site’ to produce heat and up to 5MWe of power.

In addition to providing a new, clean source of power and heat, the project will also quantify the improvements to infrastructure integrity while lowering operating temperatures from the well head to the battery. Improvements could include longer usable life and integrity of pipelines, and all transportation infrastructure, that can also mitigate existing operating costs and risks. Such potential improvements will be noted and measured during and after the project completion.

Expected Results

The project will provide behind-the-fence heat and power for ongoing hydrocarbon operations.

Outcomes of the project will include heat and power revenue, or cost avoidance to the normal operations of at least one of Razor functioning oil and gas operations.

Key studies will be completed on thermodynamic efficiency of the system including downstream effects of heat loss and reservoir impacts, which could impeded hydrocarbon production.

The project will result in technical and economic learnings that could be applied to other functioning oil and gas operations, and will create additional market opportunities for other Canadian industries.

Anticipated Environmental Benefits: Reduced Operation Expense (OPEX) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, as well as reducing land use.
