Project Objectives
The main objective of the project is to enable mines to comply to standards with respect to ammonia nitrogen, with economically viable technology.
This project will demonstrate the ECOTHORTM system on liquid effluents from mining operations (wastewater), in particular to control ammonia nitrogen.
The process used for the removal of ammonia nitrogen and heavy metals is based on the principle of electrocoagulation, coupled with electro-oxidation. The ECOTHORTM system disinfects the effluent and separates the solids, resulting in a very significant and simultaneous reduction of the concentration of several particulate, colloidal and soluble species present in the original fluid.
Expected Results
The ECOTHORTM technology is innovative and will demonstrate the potential for efficient, robust and long-lasting removal of ammonia nitrogen, suspended solids, heavy metals, dissolved and extractable from mining wastewater.
This technology will help the mining industry to comply with regulations regarding ammonia nitrogen and create an opportunity to recycle wastewater from mining operations.
Anticipated Environmental Benefits: reduced GHG emissions related to sludge removal and treatment of mining waste water, thereby improving soil quality.
