Project Objectives
This project aims to advance knowledge of methane emission sources in the landfill sector by conducting a systematic measurement study of landfills in three climatic zones. The project will define methane sources at landfills, characterize emission variation, identify mitigation opportunities, and examine the potential for improved modeling.
Expected Results
The project is expected to:
- Help achieve Canada’s greenhouse gas reductions under the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.
- Generate technical knowledge that will be used by government and regulators to increase inventory certainty and inform regulatory design.
- Create advanced monitoring devices and services for potential commercialization by Canadian companies, and new standard methods applicable to waste sector service providers or landfill operators.
- Offer diverse environmental, societal, and economic benefits by fostering a deeper comprehension of methane emissions across various Canadian climactic zones.
