Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to demonstrate the viability of ultra fast charging for different types of electric vehicles (EVs) and make it operational on a large customer base, ensuring an ideal adaptation to the needs of the market. To achieve this, the project will develop urban and highway sites where ultra fast EV charging infrastructure ranging from 100 to 350kW will be demonstrated to understand grid infrastructure implications. Currently, 50kW fast chargers are more prevalent along North American highways.
The integration of high-speed recharging technology advancements, both for the electric circuit and for the electricity distribution network, makes it possible to test the different charging technologies of several manufacturers in real-life conditions. This project will link the customers of the electric circuit and the manufacturers.
Expected Results
The project will install and test chargers at one location in Montreal with a 100 kW, 150 kW and 350 kW charger, and eventually expanding testing at 2 additional locations, 1 site in a multi-unit residential building (MURB) setting plus 1 site along a major highway.
Ultra fast charging reduces charging time and addresses a key barrier to the broader adoption of electric vehicles. It is expected that the project will direct positive change for the EV sector, create jobs, and increase the use of EVs overall, while contributing to the emergence of a real economy based on 40 to 50% of electric transport in 2040.
