Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to showcase technical, economic and social benefits of utilizing a battery energy storage system (BESS), solar photovoltaic (PV) renewable generation and advanced distribution control systems to address reliability issues faced by rural customers.

The Waterton townsite experiences more electricity outages by frequency and duration compared to many other locations in Alberta. There is only one 70-kilometre-long distribution line feeding the area and connecting Waterton to the grid. If there is an interruption to the electricity on this line, such as if a tree falls, there is no other source of backup power.  FortisAlberta devised a new solution that is a first of its kind demonstration in the province to solve this problem. The project will establish an Alberta-based cost benchmark to address distribution system deficiencies using non-wire alternatives.  It will enable Waterton to maintain power during an outage while the distribution line is being repaired.

Expected Results

This project will result in GHG emission reductions and improve service reliability.  The demonstration project will improve the economic output of local business and the experience of residents and tourists in the park. The project will also promote workforce development and building technological expertise and skillsets.
