Indigenous clean fuels projects – Clean Fuels Fund
Deadline: Request for proposal submissions will be accepted until funding is no longer available.
To meet our 2030 and 2050 net-zero emissions goals, Canada’s economy needs to be powered by two equally important energy sources – clean power and clean fuels. The clean fuels include clean hydrogen, advanced biofuels, liquid synthetic fuels and renewable natural gas. Clean fuels are expected to play a critical role in “hard-to-decarbonize” sectors such as industry and medium- and heavy-duty freight and in remote and northern locations.
We recognize the unique opportunities that clean fuels can present for Indigenous businesses and communities and encourage Indigenous participation on all projects. Through the Clean Fuels Fund, we want to ensure that our current and future processes include measures to enable and encourage greater Indigenous participation.
The Clean Fuels Fund has reserved a notional amount of funding to support Indigenous-led projects from organizations with a minimum of 50% Indigenous ownership.
Thank you for helping us shape the upcoming processes
Through the request for information, NRCan received 10 submissions that identified 15 projects in 6 regions. This information will help us finalize the upcoming call for project proposals targeted to Indigenous businesses, communities and organizations.
Next steps
A dedicated call for clean fuel production and feasibility project proposals targeted to Indigenous-owned businesses, communities and organizations will be launched in February 2022, and remain open until funding is no longer available. The Program will evaluate and approve projects as they are received and will then negotiate and sign contribution agreements.
