Over the years, CanmetENERGY employees have received both international and domestic recognition for their leadership and innovation in the field of energy science and technology. A few highlights from the last couple of years:

Dr. Tadeusz Kudra, Top 20 Reviewer of 2010 for the Chemical Engineering Science Journal (August 2011)

Dr. Tadeusz Kudra, research scientist in the field of industrial processes, has been recognized as one of the Top 20 Reviewers of 2010 for the Chemical Engineering Science Journal. This award recognize his observant critiques and edits of many of the manuscripts submitted to the journal in the past few years.

RETScreen Team, Summit Award for Leadership in Green Procurement (November 2009)

The RETScreen Team won the 2009 Summit Award for Leadership in Green Procurement on November 3, 2009. The award was presented in Victoria, B.C. at the Canadian Public Procurement Council annual forum. Gregory J. Leng received the award on behalf of the RETScreen Team. The Leadership Award in Green Procurement is designed to recognize leadership and innovation in green procurement in public sector organizations, to help governments purchase goods with an environmental benefit.

EcoTerra House, Qualité Habitation’s Recognition – Housing Research and Development Award (October 2008)

Maisons Alouette Homes was recipient of the Recognition – Housing Research and Development Award during the Qualité Habitation Gala. This exceptional prize, which was given for the first time, was awarded to Maisons Alouette Homes out of 1,250 eligible businesses, for their EcoTerra^TM project - a net zero energy home. CanmetENERGY participated in the design of the ÉcoTerra's photovoltaic roof. The gala, organized by Qualité Habitation, acknowledges Quebec-based businesses in the residential sector that particularly distinguished themselves throughout the year.

Dr. Sophie Pelland, PVSEC-17's Young Researcher Award (December 2007)

Dr. Sophie Pelland was awarded the Young Researcher Award during the PVSEC-17 Conference, held in Fukuoka, Japan for her presentation and research article "Estimating the Capacity Value and Peak-Shaving Potential of Photovoltaics in Ontario : A case-study for the City of Toronto". 

Dr. John F. Gransden, Joseph Becker Award (September 2005)

Dr. John F. Gransden, Research Scientist, received the Joseph Becker Award from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology in recognition of his achievements in coke research and technology. The Joseph Becker Award recognizes distinguished achievements in coal carbonization and technology. Dr. Gransden’s work has focused on coal and coke technology in order to improve the processes and the viability of the coal and steel industries in Canada. The standard tests used to downgrade Canadian coal, but Canada has shown that it really does have some of the best coking coals in the world, and that’s a lot to do with CanmetENERGY’s work and Dr. Gransden’s research efforts.

Mr. Greg Leng, NASA’s Group Achievement Award (June 2005)

Greg Leng, Director of RETScreen International, received a Group Achievement Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in recognition of the successful integration of CanmetENERGY’s clean energy project assessment software with NASA’s database of satellite-derived weather information. The NASA’s Group Achievement Award is given for outstanding accomplishment through the coordination of many individual efforts which has contributed substantially to the NASA mission. Mr. Leng accepted this award on the behalf of the RETScreen team for their exceptional achievement in developing the highly successful air quality, aviation weather, and energy management applications for the earth science enterprise. The partnership with NASA has helped RETScreen become a widely-used software tool (over 195,000 users in 222 countries) with a greater availability of data. It also helped NASA put their hard science data to a new, practical use and show what smart technology transfer can do.

Loblaws Refrigeration Project, Association québécoise pour la maîtrise de l'énergie (AQME)’s Energia Award (November 2005)

CanmetENERGY Loblaws refrigeration project received the Association québécoise pour la maîtrise de l'énergie (AQME)’s Energia Award for demonstration projects. CanmetENERGY scientists developed an entirely new approach to commercial refrigeration systems. The principal innovation lied in the installation of a secondary-loop refrigeration technology integrated to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, which eliminate the need for an auxiliary heating system, since the refrigeration system is sufficient to address the entire supermarket heating needs.
