2022 Public Opinion Research – Highlights around the ENERGY STAR program

This report informs Canadians on public opinion research activities around the ENERGY STAR Canada Program contracted by the government between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022.

  • In 2022, the Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) hired Ipsos Public Affairs to conduct Public Opinion Research (POR) to shed light on the public’s awareness, understanding, attitude, and perception of ENERGY STAR and EnerGuide Labelling.
  • High brand recognition was shown in the 2022 POR, with an 86% awareness statistic of the ENERGY STAR brand.
  • The 2022 POR highlighted that over half of Canadians believe that ENERGY STAR certified products offer better value than products without the label.
  • The findings illustrate that most Canadians believe purchasing ENERGY STAR certified products provide them with more benefits and that they are helping to protect the environment.
  • The POR found that the ENERGY STAR symbol had a more significant effect on purchasing decisions in 2022 than in 2020.
  • The 2022 POR also explores the ENERGY STAR for homes program, finding that there is a growing belief ENERGY STAR certified homes offer better value than their uncertified counterparts (75% for strongly agree/agree).
  • These findings show increased awareness surrounding the eligibility of ENERGY STAR certification for buildings and industrial facilities.
