Small electric motors

Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Small electric motor, a machine that converts electrical power into rotational mechanical power and that:

  • has a nominal output power of not less than 0.18 kW (0.25 horsepower) and not more than 2.2 kW (3 horsepower);
  • is a NEMA design with a two-digit frame number or an IEC design with a frame number of 63 or 71;
  • has a nominal frequency of 50/60 Hz or 60 Hz;
  • has a two-, four- or six-pole construction
  • operates using alternating current;
  • is one of the following types, namely, capacitor-start capacitor-run, capacitor-start induction-run or polyphase;
  • has an open construction;
  • is rated for continuous duty or S1 operation;
  • is designed to operate at a single speed; and
  • is designed as a general purpose motor

Does not include:

  • split-phase motor
  • shaded pole motor, or
  • permanent split-capacitor motor
Note: Small electric motors incorporated into any other product that is subject to the Regulations are also not included.
