Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Commercial gas-fired instantaneous water heater  means a flow-activated water heater that uses natural gas or propane for fuel, has an input rate greater than 58.56 kW (200,000 Btu/h), has a Vr greater than 7.6 L (2 US gallons) and is designed to provide hot water at a temperature greater than 82°C (180°F).

For the purpose of these Regulations, a gas-fired instantaneous water heater is one of the following types:

  • (a) household, if it has an input rate of less than 58.56 kW (200,000 Btu/h), has a Vr of no greater than 7.6 L (2 US gallons) and is designed to provide hot water at a temperature no greater than 82°C (180°F); or
  • (b) commercial, if it is not described in paragraph (a).

Compliance date

Manufactured on or after July 1, 2023.

  • brand name
  • model number
  • manufacturer
  • name of the certification body or province whose verification mark will be on the product or its package
  • whether a mathematical model as defined in the Regulations was used to generate any of the information provided below
  • fuel type
  • Vr, in litres
  • input rate, in kW (Btu/h)
  • maximum flow rate (litres/minute)
  • thermal efficiency
