Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Household electric water heater, a stationary electric storage tank water heater that is intended for use on a pressurized water system and that has an input rate of less than 12 kW (40,982 Bth/h) and has a Vr of at least 50L (13.21 US gallons).

Compliance date

Manufactured on or after February 3, 1995

For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations

Energy efficiency standard

Energy performance standard for household electric water heaters
Product type Standby loss, in W
Bottom inlet *
Vr of ≥ 50 L but ≤ 270 L ≤ 40 + 0.2 Vr
Vr of > 270 L but ≤ 454 L ≤ 0.472 Vr - 33.5
Top inlet
Vr of ≥ 50 L but ≤ 270 L ≤ 35 + 0.2 Vr
Vr of > 270 L but ≤ 454 L ≤ 0.472 Vr - 38.5

Vr = rated nominal storage capacity in litres
W = Watts

* supply pipe external to tank and connection near the bottom.

Standby loss as defined in the CSA test procedure.
