Adaptation 101

Within the international community, there is strong consensus that the impacts of climate change are evident in most regions of the world.

It is also clear that, even after introducing significant measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, some additional degree of climate change is unavoidable and will have significant economic, social and environmental impacts on Canadian communities. Although impacts will vary on a regional basis, all areas of the country and virtually every economic sector would be affected.

To reduce the negative impacts of climate change, and to take advantage of new opportunities presented, Canadians will adapt.

Adaptation is not a new concept: Canadians have developed many approaches that allow us to deal effectively with our extremely variable climate. Nevertheless, the amount and rate of future climate change will pose some new challenges.
