Previous Sustainable Development Strategies
The 1995 amendments to the Auditor General Act required departments and agencies to develop and table, every three years, Sustainable Development Strategies (SDSs). The Office of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development was also created at that time with a mandate to monitor the extent to which departments met the objectives of their sustainable development strategies. Under the previous approach, NRCan developed and tabled in Parliament four SDSs (1997, 2001, 2004, and 2007).
NRCan’s SDSs have been key tools for addressing the challenges and opportunities related to sustainable development. The SDSs leveraged the Department’s policies, programs, science and technology, legislation, regulation and operations to articulate an organizational commitment to sustainable development, focusing on key intermediate outcomes for a three-year period.
The strategies were informed by processes of stakeholder engagement. For example, consultation was integral to the development of Achieving Results, our fourth SDS. NRCan undertook a comprehensive public consultation process to engage stakeholders and interested groups involved with sustainable development in Canada. A diverse cross-section of individuals, public and private organizations, and interest groups were asked to participate in NRCan’s Sustainable Development Strategy dialogue. The Department reached out to other relevant federal and provincial departments and agencies, municipalities, private industry, non-government and Aboriginal organizations, and industry associations to ensure the development of credible strategies. NRCan employed a variety of engagement tools to support a rich exchange of information.
