Description | The ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program is investing $1.4 billion over 14 years to increase Canada's supply of clean electricity from renewable sources such as wind, biomass, low-impact hydro, and solar photovoltaic energy. It is intended to help position low-impact renewable energy technologies to make an increased contribution to Canada’s energy supply and thereby contribute to a more sustainable and diversified energy mix. Payments of the incentive will be paid over a 10-year period to qualifying projects. This transfer payment program has repayable contributions. |
Results Achieved | The program contributes to the expected annual generation of up to 13.3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, which is expected to lead to reductions of greenhouse gas emissions of about 6 megatonnes (Mt) annually and related criteria air contaminant emissions. In 2016-17, the projects under the program produced 12.1 TWh of electricity from renewable energy sources and achieved greenhouse gas emissions reduction of approximately 5.64 Mt. The program will continue to support renewable power production as per the terms of its contribution agreements with projects up to March 31, 2021. |
Comments on Variances | Many projects implemented in 2016-17 experienced lower than expected electricity resources due to variable resource conditions, which resulted in lower electricity generation than anticipated. |
Audits completed or planned | No internal audits were completed in 2016-17 and none are planned for the coming year. |
Evaluations completed or planned | No Evaluations were completed in 2016-17 and none are planned for the coming year. An evaluation of Renewable Energy Deployment is planned to commence in 2018-19. |
Decision following the results of last evaluation | Not applicable |
Engagement of applicants and recipients | Applications are no longer accepted for the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program, as the commitment period ended on March 31, 2011. The department continues to engage with recipients to ensure compliance with the requirements of the contribution agreements. General targeted recipient groups include businesses, institutions or organizations (i.e., an independent power producer, provincial Crown corporation, electrical utility or energy cooperative) that meet the terms and conditions of the program. |
