Project Objectives

Nova Scotia Power's smart demonstration and deployment project is aimed at integration and management of distributed energy resources (DERs). With a new system of integrated DER control, and customer engagement programs, the project will build on previous development projects and technology capabilities to understand the benefits of enhancing the grid system.

The project's main components include:

  • A community solar garden
  • Rooftop solar and batteries in three commercial deployments
  • Customer engagement for energy management
  • Tracking DERs through integration of the ESP, as well as real-time control
  • Cyber-security approaches to secure energy systems

This project is part of a collaborative demonstration with NB Power.

Expected Results

This project will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the integration and management of distributed energy resources (DERs), and will minimize the requirement for peaking power plants. It will mitigate the intermittency of renewables, and increase resilience via increased investment in onsite generation and energy storage.

Project Updates

Nova Scotia Power’s project has begun work on the solar and battery installations, including the onboarding of participants for residential batteries. Land for the solar garden has been prepared and construction has now begun. A pilot rate rider to allow customers to subscribe to the solar garden has been submitted to the Provincial Regulator for approval. Design and integration work continues on the Energy System Platform (ESP).
