John Paul II High School Carbon Free Embedded Energy System FEED Study

Lead Proponent: London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB)
Location: London, ON
EIP Contribution: $ 300,000
Project Total: $ 600,000
Strategic Area: Renewable Energy, Smart Grids, and Storage

Project Objectives:

This project involves reducing the energy consumption and eliminating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of John Paul II Catholic Secondary School (John Paul II) in London, Ontario by designing an imbedded carbon free energy generation microgrid system including renewable energy generation, energy storage and an integrated building control system.

The system will feature both real time grid islanding and local distribution company (LDC) and transmission grid support capability.

The overall objective of the project will be to demonstrate the retrofit of a 12,000 m2 high school with a fully functioning carbon free energy system that can not only provide energy resilience for itself but the electrical grid to which it connects.

Expected Results:

Once designed, the system will provide energy resilience, the elimination of all on‐site natural gas usage, a reduction of current overall energy use, and potential to demonstrate to both parents and students how Solar PV can provide firm, high quality, power and energy for most of the high school’s energy requirements.

Finally, the school board will develop curriculum to educate students on this type of emerging energy system, and, demonstrate how renewable on‐site generation systems can also improve other sustainability features of the school such as rainwater management, shading, and covered parking.
