Project Objectives

This project will address a critical gap in the northern natural resources sector by developing the integrated freeze core X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology, allowing for rapid and cost effective methods of determining geochemical baselines and subsequent changes in lake systems.

Expected Results

This freeze core XRF technology could provide a cost effective way to differentiate between climate and resource development-related impacts to the environment. By improving the efficacy of determining geochemical baselines, it can also improve Environmental Assessment processes including water pollution monitoring and remediation and mitigation strategies not only in the north but across Canada in the mining and energy sectors.
