Modelling Guide
MODELLING GUIDE (Updated) for EE4 Version 1.7

It is important that EE4 simulations for NRCan’s validation be performed accurately and consistently. Buildings and building systems are, however, extremely complex. Simulators can achieve different results on the same building because of assumptions made about the performance of the various building components. To minimize these differences, NRCan has developed guidelines to provide guidance on how to model buildings in accordance with MNECB and NRCan's validation requirements in all key areas of interest to EE4 simulators.
It is recommended that EE4 simulators download this manual and carefully read it.
This latest version reflects all the new changes, amendments and guidelines since the latest EE4 (Version 1.7) release on February 1st, 2008 including several new features that include:
- Plant chiller heat recovery for service hot water (SHW) and space heating. Chiller heat recovery can be used for SHW only, for space heating only, or for both SHW and space heating.
- Capability to model SHW using boiler, tankless heater, air-source heat pump, or indirectly from either a coil connected to the plant boiler or a central ground-source heat pump.
- Capability to specify modulating type for system furnace and plant boiler.
All projects submitted to the Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan’s) validation for new building designs must follow the directions in this new guide.
