Privacy notice
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is committed to protecting the privacy rights of individuals, including safeguarding the confidentiality of information provided by individuals and institutions.
Personal information collected by NRCan and the Government of Canada is protected from disclosure to unauthorized persons and/or agencies pursuant to the provisions of the Privacy Act . Individuals to whom the personal information pertains have the right to the protection of and access to their personal information under the Privacy Act , subject to certain exceptions and exemptions. The individual must draw a distinction between personal information held by NRCan and that held by other institutions or jurisdictions.
Specific personal information, such as your name, phone number or email address, is not automatically gathered. NRCan would only obtain this type of information if you supply it by email or by registering in a secure portion of the site for a program or service (e.g., personal information provided voluntarily when you complete an online form or request for service).
The nature of the Internet is such that web servers automatically collect certain information about a visit to a website, including the visitor's Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses are unique numbers assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISP) to all devices used to access the Internet. Web servers automatically log the IP addresses of visitors to their sites. The IP address, on its own, does not identify an individual. However, in certain circumstances, such as with the co-operation of an ISP for example, it could be used to identify an individual using the site. For this reason, the Government of Canada considers the IP address to be personal information, particularly when combined with other data automatically collected when a visitor requests a web page such as the page or pages visited, date and time of the visit.
In cases where services are provided by organizations outside of the Government of Canada, such as social media platforms, search or mobile applications, IP addresses may be recorded by the third-party service provider.
Submission of your personal information constitutes your consent to the collection, use, storage and disclosure of your personal information by NRCan. This information is being collected and used under the department’s legislative authority of the Natural Resources Act section 6 (i) and for statistical, evaluation and reporting purposes. This information will be retained until such time an unsubscribe email is received or a request is received to remove your email from the database. All unsubscribe emails will be purged once the Mailchimp account is deactivated.
The personal information collected is described in the Treasury Board Secretariat standard class of personal information bank Public Communications (PSU 914) , which is detailed under the InfoSource.
Individuals have the right to file a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding the institution’s handling of the individual’s personal information.
Individuals have the right of access to, correction and protection of personal information under the Act.
For inquiries concerning the treatment of personal information in the custody of NRCan, individuals may contact NRCan’s Access to Information and Privacy Office at 580 Booth St., 11th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0E8 or by email at nrcan.atip-aiprp.rncan@canada.ca for access to their personal information pursuant to the provisions of the Privacy Act and Access to Information Act .
