Registration and publication of Regulations Amending Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations

Effective dates

The new MEPS are effective immediately except as listed below:

  • residential gas furnaces – December 29, 2009
  • residential dishwashers – January 1, 2010
  • ceiling fan lighting – January 1, 2010
  • general service lamps – January 1, 2012 for high lumen output and December 31, 2012 for low lumen output
  • CFL package labelling – June 1, 2009

This is the first of three planned amendments to the Energy Efficiency Regulations to deliver energy, greenhouse gas and air pollutant reductions as part of Canada's Clean Air Regulatory Agenda.

Affected products

The amendment is intended to:

  • increase the stringency of existing minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for some currently regulated products:
    • residential gas furnaces
    • residential dehumidifiers
    • residential dishwashers
    • commercial ice-makers
  • introduce new MEPS and associated reporting and compliance requirements for six products:
    • residential wine chillers
    • torchieres (floor lamps)
    • ceiling fan lighting
    • traffic signal and pedestrian modules
    • commercial clothes washers
    • commercial and industrial gas unit heaters
  • introduce MEPS for general service lamps (common light bulbs) in 2012;
  • require consumer energy performance labelling with energy use in watts, lumen output and hours of use for most common lamps:
    • general service lamps (medium screw-based lamps for general use)
    • general service incandescent reflector lamps (PAR, R. ER and BR lamps)
    • compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)
