Affected products

The amendment will:

Increase the stringency and/or scope of existing minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for seven currently regulated products:

  • electric motors
  • residential gas boilers
  • residential oil boilers
  • dry-type transformers
  • large air-conditioners and heat pumps
  • commercial self-contained refrigeration
  • general service incandescent reflector lamps

Introduce new MEPS and associated reporting and compliance requirements for five products:

  • standby for electronic products
    • compact audio products
    • television (TV) and TV combination units (and reporting only of TV on mode)
    • video products
  • external power supplies
  • electric boilers
  • single package vertical air-conditioners and heat pumps

Update the Regulations to reflect minor changes stemming from a recent amendment to the Energy Efficiency Act and other relevant standards updates.

Revisions to the room air conditioners requirements are being delayed to better harmonize with regulatory requirements being developed in the U.S. The introduction of MEPS for portable air conditioners is delayed to permit additional time for industry to reach consensus on a revised test procedure.

For information on requirements in the Regulations for each product, consult Natural Resources Canada’s Requirements for energy-using products.
