Programs for Post-Secondary Students and Youth

University, college, high school students, and young Canadians who want to work for the public service can apply for the following programs. Please consult the individual program below for application requirements.

Federal Student Work Experience Program

The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) provides full-time secondary school, CEGEP, college, technical institute and university students access to student jobs offered by the federal government. The objective of the program is to provide students with opportunities to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while developing and improving their employability skills.

Post–secondary Co–op⁄Internship Program

In partnership with participating academic institutions, NRCan’s participation in co-operative education programs provides post-secondary students with relevant and practical work experience they need to fulfill the requirements of their academic program.

Research Affiliate Program

The Research Affiliate Program is specifically designed to give post-secondary students experience in applied research (design, execution, evaluation), when they must attain such knowledge and skills to graduate.

Students are normally placed with ongoing research operations in federal government facilities. The research projects must be related to the student's current degree program and must help the student develop specific knowledge and research skills.

Student Bridging Mechanisms

The bridging mechanism is a staffing option provided to managers to facilitate the integration of students into positions in the federal public service after the completion of their educational program. The hiring of a student through the Federal Student Work Experience Program, the Research Affiliate Program or Co-op/Internship programs may lead to temporary or permanent positions for which the student meets the merit criteria and conditions of employment.
