Geoscience for Sustainable Development of Natural Resources
Main objective

The objective of the Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Program is to provide regional geoscience knowledge and data that lower the risk associated with discovery of resources in Canada’s North and enables northern communities to make informed decisions about their future economy and society through land use planning and potential resource development.

The objective of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI), a collaborative federal geoscience program, is to help the mineral exploration industry be more effective in finding deeply buried mineral deposits through the provision of open, public geoscience, thereby reducing business risk, increasing industry competitiveness, creating jobs, sustaining communities, and generating economic growth.

Main objective
  • Improved biodegradability of bio-based plastics derived from agricultural or wood-based biomass suitable for use as replacements for single use plastics (e.g. packaging).
  • Support technological innovation in Canadian SME through direct funding to support early stage, pre-commercial research and development, late stage prototypes, and to accelerate commercialization.
  • Encourage procurement from companies led by under-represented groups, such as women, Indigenous, youth, disabled individuals, LGBTQ+ and others.
  • Foster greater industry-research collaboration through the release of challenges for solutions that address key Government of Canada priorities.

Main objective

GeoConnections is an ongoing program with the mandate and responsibility to lead the evolution of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) with standards-based technologies and operational policies for data sharing and integration to address key economic, social and environmental priorities.

Through regular Calls for Proposals, GeoConnections is co-funding the development of innovative adoption and further development of the CGDI with eligible recipients. GeoConnections fosters innovation in the pre-commercial and de-risking phase, through identification of gaps and targeted projects in the CGDI. The objectives of the program are to:

  1. Increase awareness of the benefits of using geospatial data and tools to achieve goals for social, economic and environmental priorities;
  2. Keep Canada at the leading edge of accessing, sharing and using geospatial information via the Internet;
  3. Support the integration and use of geospatial data to support effective decision-making; and,
  4. Coordinate the development of national policies, standards and mechanisms and support their implementation to ensure maintenance and updating of geospatial data and compatibility with global standards.

Main objective

NRCan pays 50% of the operating costs of the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board. The province pays the other 50%. This is done pursuant to section 28 of the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Resources Accord Implementation Act. The funds are drawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund. Cost recovery regulations put in place in 2016 allow the Board to cost recover up to 100% of eligible costs from industry, which are remitted to the government of Canada and the province of Nova Scotia on a 50/50 basis.

Main objective

Since 1997, NRCan has contributed to the Youth Employment Strategy through the Science and Technology Internship Program. This program supports youth between the ages of 15-30 in gaining work experience in science, technology, engineering and math fields in the natural resources sectors. The program supports the Minister’s mandate to support innovation, job creation and clean technology in the natural resources sectors. The program also promotes diversity in the natural resources labour market by targeting participation by individuals in the designated employment equity groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, visible minorities, and persons with disabilities).

Through NRCan’s A-base funding, approximately 50 youth internships are created per year. In Budget 2017, NRCan received incremental funding of $16.4M over 2 years ($7.5M in 2017-18 and $8.9M in 2018-19) to create an additional 1100 Green Jobs internships.

Main objective

The objective of this program is active engagement of Indigenous groups with the Crown or its representatives in dialogues related to the NRCan mandate. Examples of such dialogues include policy dialogues related to modernizing Canada’s energy regulator and dialogues related to achieving wildlife habitat and population recovery.

Dialogues seek to share information with, and gather input from, Indigenous groups who may have an interest in or may be affected by policies and options addressed by the policy dialogue. Results will be measured by:

  • the number of contribution agreements signed by eligible groups;
  • the percentage of funding disbursed versus offered;
  • the number of Indigenous groups who received funding that provided written/oral comments and/or participated in meetings with the Crown or its representatives; and,
  • the number of reports, position papers and/or discussion papers generated by Indigenous groups in relation to policy dialogues.

Initial recipients: recipients that will further distribute funding to Ultimate Recipients, including:

  • Indigenous communities or governments;
  • Tribal Councils or entities that fulfill a similar function (e.g., general council);
  • National and regional Indigenous councils, and tribal organizations;
  • Indigenous (majority owned and controlled by Indigenous people) for-profit and not-for-profit organizations

Ultimate Recipients: those recipients that receive funding from an Initial Recipient to participate in dialogues or the production of reports or input for the purpose of a dialogue, including:

  • Indigenous communities or governments;
  • Tribal Councils or entities that fulfill a similar function (e.g., general council);
  • National and regional Indigenous councils, and tribal organizations;
  • Indigenous (majority owned and controlled by Indigenous people) for-profit and not-for-profit organizations; and,
