NRCan and the CRA each have different responsibilities in the evaluation process of clean electricity property that is qualified natural gas energy equipment.
NRCan is responsible for:
- Receiving system plans
- Providing initial reviews
- Issuing system evaluations
Initial review process
Steps of initial review process (applicable only if your natural gas energy system is at the design stage (FEED stage) or has not yet reached Final Investment Decision (FID), and you wish to obtain an initial review from NRCan).
This process involves multiple steps, depending on the level of maturity of the natural gas energy system design. Please note that NRCan’s initial review is optional and not binding.

Important: Please note that this initial review at FEED stage does not constitute a system evaluation i.e., qualified natural gas energy system evaluation. To be issued a qualified natural gas energy system evaluation, required for claiming the Clean Electricity ITC, you must submit a system plan prepared by a qualified validation firm with construction ready design package.

Note: In order to claim the Clean Electricity ITC for qualified natural gas energy equipment, you must be issued a system evaluation.

Important: To support your Clean Electricity ITC Claim with CRA, which requires verification of your natural gas energy equipment, you will need to submit Annual Progress Reports to NRCan including a list of equipment claimed and any additional documentation required by NRCan.
