The main objective of this project is to pilot the production and efficacy of tailored activated carbons produced from sustainably sourced feedstocks such as petroleum coke and waste wood. These specialty products are designed to competitively capture contaminants of concerns from various industrial effluent streams and mine tailings. The project will also analyze dosing and dispersal methods for most effective and efficient target adsorbate capture.
It is expected that these R&D activities will lead to lower waste water emissions from natural resource extraction operations, thereby accelerating and improving remediation activities.
Anticipated Environmental Benefits: This project is anticipated to accelerate the return of resource extraction process waters back to the natural environment, while reducing water usage, accelerate closure and land restoration activities related to tailings management in the oil sands and hard rock mining industry.
