Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to operate a distribution-level electricity market using AI-based load forecasting and network-constrained optimization. The project will procure resources through a market-based capacity auction, wherein proponents will submit bids of price ($) and quantity (MW) for their distributed energy resources (DERs), including renewable generation, storage, and demand response. The procured resources will be notified of when to dispatch via a transactive energy platform, based on grid conditions, to resolve capacity constraints at select medium voltage feeders. Through incentivizing DERs, the project aims to help defer traditional infrastructure investments, mitigating rate increases for ratepayers.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Accelerate grid modernization to optimize electricity system assets, improve system reliability, resiliency, and increase distributed energy resources penetration.
  2. Assess the techno-economic potential of non-wires alternatives to meeting grid needs and set a technical and financial model for similarly sized utilities to expand beyond poles and wires.
  3. Demonstrate the role of an active distribution system in the future electric grid.
  4. Share knowledge and insights to enhance public awareness.
