Sharing your home’s energy efficiency performance
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is no longer accepting new applicants. Homeowners who are already participating are encouraged to proceed in a timely manner with their retrofits and will continue to be eligible for funding and support through the Canada Greener Homes portal.
If you are an Ontario, Quebec or Nova Scotia homeowner participating in the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus, the Rénoclimat or the Home Energy Assessment program, please contact your provincial program for more information.

With your consent, we will be including some of the information from your EnerGuide home evaluation on an upcoming platform, including your home’s relative energy consumption rating. By participating, you will join homeowners from across the country in providing this energy information, allowing you to learn how other homes in your neighbourhood are doing and see what the possibilities are for moving towards low-and zero-emissions homes.

What is an EnerGuide label and how do I get one?
The label is an official record of your home’s energy rating. It is provided as part of the report you will receive after both your pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide home evaluations. Your EnerGuide label provides a prediction of annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions based on the fixed elements of your home (e.g., the heating system and types of windows), standardized operating conditions, and local climate information. This information is entered into a simulation software to produce your personalized label. The label is designed to help you:
- Better understand your home’s energy performance
- Make informed decisions when buying and renting and take action to reduce your home’s greenhouse gas emissions
- Increase the value of your home once energy efficiency improvements are made

Benefits of sharing your home’s energy use
By sharing information on how much energy your home uses, your EnerGuide label will allow us to display information on home energy performance throughout Canada. Transparency and accessibility of this information will enable Canadian homeowners to make informed choices in reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Similar to how you would share your achievements or goals on social media, displaying an EnerGuide label for your home will encourage your neighbours and your community to reach for greater energy efficiency in their homes. It will also let you compare your home to the homes around you, and help you set your goals.
Federal, provincial, and municipal governments, as well as university and college researchers, decision makers, businesses and individuals, will have a rich data source and evidence base to identify gaps and opportunities for future energy efficiency initiatives.
Improving your home’s energy efficiency is one of the best ways you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. Use the hashtag #CanadaGreenerHomes and share your label!
What do I have to do?
As part of the registration process for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, all homeowners will be asked for their consent to share information from their EnerGuide home evaluation online.
Where do I find my EnerGuide label?
You will receive a physical label after each EnerGuide home evaluation. We recommend you place the sticker on your electrical panel. In addition, if you provide consent, your electronic label will be displayed on our home energy labelling map (not yet available but under development).
What’s disclosed and not disclosed from my EnerGuide label?
If you consent to share information from your EnerGuide evaluation, all information in the EnerGuide home evaluation could be disclosed except for information that would personally identify you (i.e., your name). Only the following personal information will be disclosed:
- Your home address
- Your home’s EnerGuide (Gigajoule/year) rating
- Greenhouse gas/year ratings filtered by age/size/type of home in your area
- Common and impactful retrofits that have been undertaken for that type of home (but not what specific retrofits you have done on your home)
Your Energuide label will be retained in the portal. At any time, you have the right to update or withdraw your personal information from the portal. Subsequent owners who have purchased a home with an Energuide evaluation will also have the opportunity to update or withdraw information from the portal.
The following information will not be included on your EnerGuide label and will not be disclosed:
- Your name
- Your home’s characteristics (e.g., number of rooms)
- Your home’s actual energy consumption
Share your home retrofit journey
Be proud of what you have accomplished with your home. Use the hashtag #CanadaGreenerHomes to share before and after photos of your energy-efficient retrofits, or share your new EnerGuide label. Click the hashtag to see home retrofits from other Canadians and see how your improved EnerGuide rating stacks up. We may reach out to feature your retrofit journey on our website!
How is my personal information protected?
Protection of your personal information is a top priority!
As part of your home’s energy performance, the personal information collected during your EnerGuide evaluations by an Energy Advisor is protected under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) or equivalent provincial privacy legislation. In addition, Natural Resources Canada will protect personal information in accordance with the federal Privacy Act.
PIPEDA or equivalent provincial privacy legislation
Protects the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by private-sector organizations and federally regulated organizations. The service organizations and energy advisors must adhere to PIPEDA or equivalent provincial privacy legislation.
Privacy Act
Protects the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by a government institution and provides individuals with a right to access that information.
Where you provide consent to disclosure of the EnerGuide label, that information will be made available on the portal. All other information collected about you and your house during the EnerGuide evaluation will be used exclusively by NRCan for the purposes of administering your file, statistical analysis and quality assurance. Your decision to consent only applies to the disclosure of the EnerGuide label, and does not otherwise affect your involvement in this program.
Where you provide consent to disclosure of the EnerGuide label, that information will be made available on the portal. All other information collected about you and your house during the EnerGuide evaluation will be used exclusively by NRCan for the purposes of administering your file, statistical analysis and quality assurance. Your decision to consent only applies to the disclosure of the EnerGuide label and does not otherwise affect your involvement in this program. Your consent can be withdrawn at any time.
