Stirling Marathon

Stirling Marathon is a Canadian family-owned manufacturer of specialty home appliances in North America operating under the Stirling, Marathon and Epic brands. Products offered by Stirling Marathon include a full line of chest and upright freezers, compact and mid-sized refrigerators, electric ranges and built-in wine and beverage coolers. The company puts energy efficiency at the forefront with their passion to develop, design and manufacture appliances in Ontario.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Continued to make ENERGY STAR certified products more accessible to Canadians through new retail partnerships across the country with a focus on training retailers to enhance product knowledge.
  • Increased their number of ENERGY STAR certified models by 38% since 2023.
  • Introduced new product categories (such as ENERGY STAR certified convertible fridge/freezer models and 30 in. electric ranges) while expanding upon existing categories.

  • Expanded their certified product offerings in Canada with 100% of dishwashers and front-load washers, 81% of refrigerators, 60% of top-load washers, and 49% of dryers now ENERGY STAR certified. A total of 170 ENERGY STAR certified models are now on the market, up from 156 in 2023.
  • Amplified ENERGY STAR initiatives via social media channels, including participation in the 12 Days of ENERGY STAR campaign, ENERGY STAR Day, ENERGY STAR Awards and an ENERGY STAR promotional offer on Earth Day.

  • Published an article in TheFutureEconomy.ca emphasizing Ricoh’s sustainability efforts and highlighting its previous ENERGY STAR Award win. The article was heavily promoted on LinkedIn with a potential reach of 33,526 through employee advocacy.

  • Recruited nearly 95,000 ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats across multiple connected thermostat vendors for management in its Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) portfolio, now totalling over 600,000 devices.

An ENERGY STAR Canada Participant since 2001, The Home Depot Canada is one of the country’s leading home improvement retailers with 182 stores across Canada.

The Home Depot Canada recognizes that their biggest opportunity to create positive environmental change comes from the products they sell. As such, consumers can find a wide array of ENERGY STAR certified products including appliances, commercial products, electronics, windows and doors, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and lighting.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Sold approximately 950,000 ENERGY STAR certified products in 2024, highlighted by a 31% growth in ENERGY STAR certified appliances and home comfort products.
  • Helped customers save over $3 million on energy-efficient products by participating in provincial rebate programs with BC Hydro, FortisBC, SaskPower, Efficiency Manitoba, Enbridge Gas, SaveEnergyNB, Efficiency Nova Scotia and efficiencyPEI to offer savings to customers on ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Added nearly 500 new ENERGY STAR certified products to their offering, totalling over 5,600 products for sale in nearly every eligible category.
  • Built brand awareness through media campaigns, social media content, participating in the 12 Days of ENERGY STAR contest and a strong presence across printed and digital materials, such as brochures, signage, buying guides and in-store labels.

Independent Electricity System Operator – Save on Energy

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) delivers key services across Ontario’s electricity sector. These include managing the province’s power system in real-time, planning for Ontario’s future energy needs, delivering energy-efficiency programs and designing a more efficient electricity marketplace to support sector evolution.

Through the Save on Energy brand, the IESO offers programs and incentives to help individuals and businesses use energy more wisely and achieve greater energy efficiency.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Grew their Save on Energy Peak Perks Program with 107,516 additional ENERGY STAR certified device registrations, bringing the total number to 205,332, all of which are ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats.
  • Through point-of-sale customer discounts, the Instant Discounts Program facilitated the distribution of 92,818 ENERGY STAR certified lighting products to existing commercial, agricultural, industrial, institutional, and multi-unit residential buildings and facilities.
  • Delivered 204,000 ENERGY STAR certified products to nearly 450 homes as part of the Energy Affordability Program supporting income-eligible electricity consumers.
  • Continued offering educational tools, resources and training programs for businesses and professionals, including two successful events that trained 100 sector participants on using the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool.
  • Provided incentives of up to $3,000 to 300 businesses through the Small Business Program for implementing energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration measures, including ENERGY STAR certified lighting.
  • Ran a variety of always-on advertising campaigns alongside targeted, program-specific campaigns aimed at enhancing education on energy efficiency and increased awareness of ENERGY STAR’s energy-efficient products and labelling.

The Government of Prince Edward Island founded efficiencyPEI in 2008 to increase energy efficiency across the province. This organization is committed to providing Islanders with knowledge, advice and programs that will promote sustainable energy use.

efficiencyPEI encourages energy efficiency and the benefits it delivers to the economic, social, and environmental well-being of Prince Edward Island residents and the businesses that serve them.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Installed ENERGY STAR certified products for 1,094 income-qualified islanders as part of the Winter Warming Program.
  • Increased participation in the Home Insulation Program by offering rebates on ENERGY STAR certified windows and doors, resulting in 2,526 installations, up 25% from the previous year.
  • The division continued the income-qualified Free Heat Pump program with the installation of over 1,758 Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) eligible, ENERGY STAR certified units. This is in addition to 5,700 ENERGY STAR certified heat pumps rebated through efficiencyPEI’s Energy Efficient Equipment Rebate (EEER) program.
  • In addition to year-round in-store rebates, completed two instant savings campaigns, which provided in-store rebates on over 29,000 ENERGY STAR certified products.

Manufacturing in Canada for more than 28 years, JELD-WEN of Canada offers homeowners across the country a full line of window and door products at every price point. JELD-WEN of Canada, a subsidiary of JELD-WEN Holding, Inc., manufactures three regionally specific window and door collections out of their manufacturing facilities in Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.

The company also operates an exterior/interior door manufacturing facility in Quebec and an interior door manufacturing centre in Manitoba. Rounding out their commitment to the Canadian marketplace, JELD-WEN of Canada operates an interior door and trim distribution centre, in New Brunswick, serving all Atlantic Canada.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Offered a wider array of ENERGY STAR certified products, increasing from 59,181 in 2023 to over 65,000 in 2024.
  • Achieved ENERGY STAR certification for the JWC8500 Hybrid window, their most energy-efficient window.
  • 95% of their year’s traditional and digital media focused on ENERGY STAR certified products and programs, in both the English and French markets.
  • Partnered with industry professionals, retailers, builders, community initiatives and Canadian buying groups to expand access to ENERGY STAR certified products.

Nordik Windows Inc.

Nordik Windows began as a small Ottawa-based window manufacturer but has since grown to manufacture, sell, and install windows throughout Ontario and Quebec, and has recently expanded into international markets. Nordik Windows offers a wide range of energy-efficient windows, with many models earning the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation. The organization has been an ENERGY STAR Canada Participant since 2006 and continues to show a strong commitment to energy efficiency in Canada.

In addition to supporting energy efficiency, Nordik Windows has partnered with a reforestation organization to plant one tree for every window installed.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Continuously improving product manufacturing and recycling processes to ensure greater energy efficiency and quality while reducing waste and environmental impact.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR certified products as the official national standard for all replacement windows.
  • Consistently included the ENERGY STAR logo on their website, brochures, print ads, product catalogues and on social media, reaching over 3 million people through ads on social media.

  • Created and promoted a digital media campaign featuring their ENERGY STAR Canada 2024 award win that garnered over 33 million paid impressions.
  • Created a mural dedicated to ENERGY STAR in select retail stores.

  • Launched the second generation of their flagship iAdaptAir purifier, which more efficiently and quietly cleans the air in a room according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) standards, five times per hour.
  • Increased the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) without increasing electricity demand.
  • Refined the application of lean manufacturing principles to minimize waste, reduce manufacturing time, and enhance energy efficiency.

Saint John Regional Hospital

Horizon Health Network's Saint John Regional Hospital is the largest tertiary care hospital in New Brunswick, the primary health care referral centre for the Saint John region, and the major trauma and cardiac care centre for all New Brunswick.

Built in 1982, Saint John Regional Hospital operates 24/7 making energy conservation and efficiency a priority, while maintaining and improving patient care. The hospital has used ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® since 2016 and in 2018 became the first health care facility in Canada to be certified for its superior energy performance.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Focused on operational optimization which included regular reviews of air handling units to ensure setpoints and comfort levels were maintained with enhanced energy efficiency. Through this work, staff were able to quickly recognize faulty heating and cooling coil valves that were fixed and/or replaced to maintain efficient operation throughout the year.

Horizon Health Network's Sussex Health Centre is an acute care hospital serving a population of approximately 30,000. Built in 1977, this Sussex, New Brunswick hospital leverages ENERGY STAR tools and resources to drive energy savings and provide leadership across the sector.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Operational optimization which included regular reviews of air handling units to ensure setpoints and comfort levels were maintained with improved energy efficiency. This allowed staff to ensure that the ground-source heat pump and heat recovery wheel were utilized to maximize energy efficiency.

Bliss Carman Middle School, Anglophone West School District (ASD-W)

Located in Fredericton, New Brunswick and built in 2009, Anglophone West School District’s Bliss Carman Middle School has demonstrated a sustained commitment to improving its energy efficiency. The school’s energy management program has integrated ENERGY STAR tools to save energy and involve all staff and students.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Added “Low occupancy”, “Professional Development Scheduling” and “Snow Day mode” as energy-savings operational modes to reduce energy demand and consumption when school was not fully occupied with students.
  • Continued efforts to foster a culture of energy awareness and conservation.

Etobicoke Wellness Centre

The Etobicoke Wellness Centre is a Class A LEED Gold medical office building and home to physicians’ offices, as well as outpatient programs and services. Located in Etobicoke, Ontario and constructed in 2018, the Etobicoke Wellness Centre is owned by Morguard and EGH Health Partners Building Limited. The Etobicoke Wellness Centre has improved its operational efficiency by using sustainable innovative design, along with ENERGY STAR tools and resources.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Continuously adjusted the building automation system based on usage patterns.
  • Upgraded the green roof to ensure long-term performance and efficiency.
  • Conducted ongoing preventative maintenance for all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment to optimize energy efficiency.
  • Achieved additional energy savings through the continued use of occupancy sensors throughout the building.

This is Etobicoke Wellness Centre’s third ENERGY STAR Canada award (2023, 2024 and 2025).

Building of the Year—Multifamily Housing – 2025

Aurora

Aurora is a multifamily residential building in Victoria, British Columbia. Built in 2019 to BC Step Code 2 standard, this energy efficient building by design and location features studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts, balconies, in-suite laundry and mountain-views. Owned and operated by Boardwalk REIT, Aurora demonstrated its commitment to energy efficiency by leveraging ENERGY STAR in its energy management program.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Continually engaged with resident members on environmental solutions through their BWell program.
  • Developed proactive and impactful programs, initiatives and strategies that align with its core pillar of ‘B Sustainable’ to help residents reduce their energy and water consumption.

Watson Manor - 577 East 8th Avenue

Constructed in 1983, Watson Manor is a multifamily residential building located at 577 East 8th Avenue in Vancouver, British Columbia. Owned and managed by Third Space Properties Inc., the building is situated in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood and features one- and two-bedroom homes, balconies, parking and accessible units for persons with limited mobility. Watson Manor’s participation in the ENERGY STAR program supports Third Space’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Completed an energy and decarbonization audit to identify energy-saving opportunities and developed a decarbonization roadmap for this property and the broader Third Space Properties portfolio.
  • Completed low-flow showerhead replacements in all residential suites, significantly reducing both domestic hot water energy use and water consumption.
  • Completed planning and preparation for a domestic hot water heat pump system, leading to full electrification of Watson Manor.
  • Completed a full climate change risk assessment for the building to address site-specific climate risks, strengthened climate preparedness in Vancouver, and reinforced their net zero strategies.

ATCO Centre

ATCO Centre, constructed in 1982, is an office building located at 10035 - 105th Street NW in downtown Edmonton, Alberta. Owned by Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and managed by Triovest Realty Advisors, a Colliers Company, the ATCO Centre leveraged the ENERGY STAR program to improve energy efficiency for tenant comfort.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Adjusted the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to align with building occupancy, thereby reducing energy consumption and increasing cost savings.
  • Installed variable frequency drives on the air handling units for more efficient control.
  • Replaced pneumatic controls with digital controls for improved energy management.
  • Redesigned and upgraded heating and cooling controls to decrease significantly boiler and chiller runtime.
  • Installed energy savings lighting controls and occupancy sensors in common areas and mechanical rooms to minimize unnecessary usage.
  • Completed upgrades to domestic hot water systems, improving both efficiency and reliability.
  • Improved the building automation system (BAS) and building management system (BMS) by:
    • Adding trend logging, advanced graphics, and real time analytics to monitor performance in real time; and
    • Upgrading the software and central processor providing better system stability, more flexible programming and enhanced integration with other building systems.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Implemented adjustments to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment to reduce energy demand during peak times.
  • Maintained a strong preventative maintenance schedule to ensure all systems ran efficiently.
  • Continuously tracked energy consumption.

Sun Life Waterloo King is a single-tenant office complex owned by Concert Realty Services Ltd. and managed by BentallGreenOak. Located on the border of Kitchener and Waterloo in Ontario, this unique office complex is a building composed of nine major constructions, all built between 1912 and 1986. Sun Life Waterloo King continues to demonstrate a longstanding leadership in both setting and exceeding energy efficiency and environmental goals and promoting best practices using ENERGY STAR tools and resources.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Optimized building performance by installing LED lighting in various areas of the building with existing occupancy detection; replacing east facing low-rise windows with energy efficient models; participating in a peak day notification program and replacing and upgrading the loadbank system.
  • Supported a culture of energy awareness and conservation by engaging building tenants in a community-wide clean up project for Earth Day.

This is Sun Life Waterloo King’s fifth ENERGY STAR Canada award (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025).

Built in 2002, Fountains of Mission offers independent living and assisted living care. Chartwell is committed to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to grow its comprehensive energy management program.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Developed a plan and established the budget to install new LED lighting in the majority of the building for implementation in 2025.
  • Installed 70 new digital thermostats to optimize efficiency and maintain an ideal living environment.
  • Conducted continuous preventative maintenance such as twice-yearly full-building filter changes.

2260 Matheson Boulevard East

Built in 2020, 2260 Matheson Boulevard East is a distribution centre located in Mississauga, Ontario. This warehouse was built by the Panattoni Development Company and managed by CAP Ontario Inc. 2260 Matheson Boulevard East leveraged the ENERGY STAR program to achieve its environmental goals and is dedicated to reducing energy consumption by 2% year over year.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Installed a utility meter monitoring system to collect real-time utility consumption data that was used to analyze trends and develop a plan to further improve energy efficiency measures.
  • Completed energy audits to monitor energy consumption regularly.
  • Developed awareness of energy efficient measures by working with the tenants to implement energy-saving initiatives.

This warehouse was built by the Panattoni Development Company and managed by CAP Ontario Inc. 883 Thornton Road South, built in 2021, implemented ENERGY STAR best practices to help achieve a decrease in energy consumption.

Key 2024 accomplishments include:

  • Successfully implemented targeted upgrades that significantly reduced the building’s overall energy consumption.
  • Further developed the building’s strong commitment to energy efficiency by introducing a building-wide sustainability strategy focused on continuous improvement, with regular tracking of energy performance and active tenant engagement in green practices.

  • Switched some equipment such as tow motors and regenerative thermal oxidizers from natural gas to electric power to reduce greenhouse gases.
  • Increased the role of renewable energy in HCM’s strategy through on-site solar-powered lights and utilizing Renewable Energy Credits from Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) for wind and solar energy.
