This section of the guide provides technical definitions of the energy-using products that must bear an EnerGuide label, as well as the applicable test standard and compliance dates. For current minimum performance levels and additional details, consult the Energy Efficiency Regulations at http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/regulations/11239.

  • Clothes dryer means a standard or compact electrically operated and electrically heated household tumble-type clothes dryer.A compact clothes dryer means it has a drum capacity of less than 125 litres (L) (4.4 cubic feet [cu. ft.]).

  • Clothes washer means a standard or compact electrically operated household clothes washer that is topor front-loaded. It has an internal control system that regulates the water temperature without the need for user intervention after the initiation of machine operation. Compact clothes washer means it has a container capacity of less than 45 L (1.6 cu. ft.). This definition does not include wringer washers, twin-tub washers and spinners.

  • Integrated clothes washer-dryer means a household appliance with a clothes-washer component and a clothes-dryer component that is located above, below or beside the clothes-washer component or is powered by a single power source. The controls are on either the washer or the dryer. It includes a combination clothes washerdryer in which the washer and dryer functions use the same drum. In a standard integrated unit (usually an over/under washer-dryer) other than a combination unit, the clothes-washer capacity not be less than 45 L (1.6 cu. ft.); the clothes dryer drum capacity must be at least 125 L (4.4 cu. ft.). A standard combination unit must a have a drum capacity of not less than 45 L (1.6 cu. ft.). A compact unit does not meet the standard size requirements.

  • Dishwasher means a standard or compact electrically operated automatic household dishwasher that is
    • built-in (permanently connected to a household water and electric supply); or
    • portable (designed not to be connected permanently to a household water and electric supply).
    It does not include commercial, industrial or institutional machines. A compact dishwasher means it has a capacity of less than eight place settings and six serving pieces.

  • Electric range means one of the following appliances:
    • Range or stove – a freestanding (not supported by surrounding cabinetry, walls or other similar structures) or built-in (supported by surrounding cabinetry, walls or other similar structures) appliance equipped with one or more surface elements and one or more ovens;
    • Oven – a built-in or wall-mounted (supported by a wall) appliance without surface elements and with one or more ovens; or
    • Cooktop – a counter-mounted (supported by horizontal surface cabinetry) or modular (cartridge that can be plugged into a receptacle on the range surface) appliance with one or more surface elements. The top can be conventional, smooth, solid surface, modular or tungsten halogen.
    It does not include
    • microwave cooking appliances;
    • portable appliances designed for an electrical supply of 120 volts;
    • household appliances with one or more induction heating elements; or
    • warming compartments or zones that are not intended for cooking (cannot raise temperature above 100°C [212°F]).

  • Freezer means a household freezer that has a capacity not exceeding 850 L (30 cu. ft.). Refer to tables 1 or 2 in CSA-C300-00 for definitions of product type.

  • Refrigerator or combination refrigerator-freezer means a household refrigerator or combination refrigerator-freezer that has a capacity of not more than 1100 L (39 cu. ft.), but does not mean a refrigerator that employs an absorption refrigeration system. Refer to tables 1 or 2 in CSA-C300-00 for definitions of product type.

  • Room air conditioner means a single-phase electric room air conditioner with or without louvred sides that is not a packaged terminal air conditioner and that does not exceed 10.55 kW (36 000 Btu/h) in cooling capacity. It includes casement-slider and casement-only models.
