Interview with Annie on diversity in impact assessment

Annie, a member of the Natural Resources Canada impact assessment team, appears on screen.

“My name is Annie and I work in the impact assessment at Natural Resources Canada. So that means that I’m an expert in the impact assessment process. So diversity is very important in impact assessment. Why is that important? Because the projects, they generate very complex problems. And they need to have a key set of questions and answers to answer those problems and questions. So in order to answer and to understand all the effects from a project, we need a diversity of expertise and of disciplines to cover all aspects and not leave any gaps. So in terms of just looking at the effects of a project, we need a diversity of expertise. But also, it’s been demonstrated by research that diverse teams, like diverse scientific teams, they also lead to better innovation and to have diversity in the solution that it will bring to complex problems. And we can really observe that in practice within our impact assessment team. We are a group. We are a team. I have colleagues from different cultural origins, gender and different perspective. They have different backgrounds. And it’s really that diversity that brings better, efficient team and better results. That diversity helps to ask different questions. And in the end, we are better, more efficient, and we produce better results by being a diverse team.”
