What positions/jobs are being staffed at NRCan? Does NRCan only offer science-based positions?
  • NRCan is a diverse department and offers numerous careers in NRCan’s various sectors — and no, we are not just science-based! We offer many different positions all over the map.
  • We are looking to staff positions in science, policy, finance, HR, communications and more! We have jobs posted throughout the year on our web-site and on GC Jobs (jobs.gc.ca). We invite you to visit the site often as new jobs opportunities are posted on a daily basis.
  • NRCan has positions and regular job opportunities in several disciplines such as for engineers from all specialties, land surveyors, research scientists, geologists, physical scientists, forestry officers, biologists, chemists, technicians, policy analysts, economists, information technologists, human resources, communications and finance.
Are the positons only in Ottawa? Does NRCan have regional offices?
  • Most positions are located in Ottawa, the National Capital Region, but NRCan has offices from coast to coast to coast with opportunities across Canada. We will explore a similar event in our regions at a later date.
  • About half of NRCan scientific staff are located outside Ottawa, across the country.
  • The Forestry Centres are located in Fredericton, Quebec City, Sault Ste.-Marie, Edmonton and Victoria.
  • Energy labs are in Varennes, Ottawa and Devon.
  • A mines and minerals lab will soon be established in Hamilton.

Will there be on-the-spot hiring at this event?
  • Yes, there will be on-the-spot opportunities, and many of our managers will be conducting informal interviews on the spot.
Do you hire students for internships /summer jobs?
  • NRCan hires hundreds of students in every sector (Science, Corporate and Policy), across the country and throughout the year mainly through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), Co-operative Education Programs (CO-OP) and the Research Affiliate Program (RAP). Information is available on our website about the FSWEP and RAP programs. Managers collaborate with educational institutions to offer CO-OP opportunities. Students are invited to consult the University Career websites or other tools to find out about CO-OP opportunities at NRCan.

Do I have to be bilingual?
  • You do not have to be bilingual if the job is in a unilingual region.
  • As you progress in your career, you might wish to become bilingual. Language training is available internally.
Do I have to be a Canadian citizen?
  • Preference is given to Canadian citizens as indicated on job posters. You may still apply as you might be considered depending on the number of applicants, level of specialization of the position, etc.
Should I be prepared to interview with managers?
  • Yes, managers (if desired) will conduct informal interviews with selected candidates. Some interviews may help make on-the-spot hiring decisions, and some might place the candidate in a personnel pool to help meet managers’ anticipated staffing needs.
How do I apply? When are the deadlines?
  • There are no applications needed to attend and participate in NRCan’s Talent and Networking Fair 2018.
  • However, to apply for positions advertised at the fair, all applications are submitted on-line and deadlines may vary.
Do you take CVs? Do applications need to be submitted on-line?
  • At this fair, we are looking at moving away from this traditional format of CV/resume exchanges. Please do not hesitate to bring your CV/resume to share with hiring managers; however, we are looking to connect applicants in a more manageable way on the day of the fair by avoiding CV/resume exchanges.
